Kappus Farms is committed to saving the environment and to food safety

Nowhere else can you be sure to get the safest and freshest fruit, but for the fruit that you select yourself, right off the tree at Kappus Farms.

At Kappus Farms, we are committed to using the safest and most environmentally friendly fruit propagation methods that are available in the world.  Our goal is to maintain product safety, worker safety and to continually preserve the world that we live in by using the latest technological advances in fruit growing.

Below are a few examples of the latest and newest techniques we use on this farm:

  • Spray trees with a derivative of grape juice to deter birds from attacking the fruit.
  • Spray the cherries with a mild solution of salt to help prevent cherries from  cracking.
  • Mow the grass short to keep insects and rodents away from the trees
  • Use perfumed cling free clothes dryer strips to keep the deer from nibbling on the branches.
  • We place twist ties with moth pheromones on trees to prevent male moths from finding a mate.
  • Use startling cannons and bird distress call recorders to keep birds from eating too many cherries.
  • Chop pruning brush instead of burning to prevent air pollution.
  • Instruct our workers to follow specific rules for safety and hygiene to prevent injuries and contamination of our products.
  • USDA Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certified for Peaches and Apples. see link
  • New York State Produce Quality Assurance Program Participant (PQAP). see link
  • Only use city water that is inspected for drinking water for the irrigation of our fruit
  • We use orchard sweepers to remove debris from the bottom of the tree.
  • Use many more safety and environmental practices too numerous and complex to explain here
